Error deploying CRM rules on Exchange Mailboxes “Failed to save the rule to user’s mailbox”

I have faced this situtaion few times when CRM Rule deployment wizard fails to save forwarding rules on exchange server’s mailboxes. When I first googled the issue I came up with this blog entry and confirmed that its an exchange issue.  http://blogs.msdn.com/mscrmfreak/archive/2006/08/09/692169.aspx

But then the client went ahead deleted all the rules and alerts from outlook “rules and alerts” but still error remains the same. After few days when I ran into same problem for another client and searched a bit harder (I guess) I found this article which allows you to create the rule manually in the mailbox. It worked without any issues. Here’s the KB article:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930140 . You can export and then import the rule for other users.

It would be also worth to try other resolution method described in the KB article. I am copying the steps to create the manual rule as it is (with my input):

Call this as 2 Phase process. 1st Phase you would do on one machine and 2nd phase on left over users.

1st Phase Steps

1.

Start Outlook.
2. Click Tools, click Rules and Alerts, and then click New Rule.
3. Click Check messages when they arrive, and then click Next.
4. Click Where my name is in the To or Cc box, and then click Next.
5. Click Forward it to people or distribution list as an attachment, click people or distribution list in the Step 2 section, double-click the Microsoft Dynamics CRM forward mailbox account that you created when you installed the Microsoft Dynamics CRM E-Mail Exchange Router, and then click OK.
6. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Forward mailbox is CRM MAILBOX.

After that you need to export these rules so that you can import it for rest of the users. Here is a link which would guide how to export the rules. http://www.niehs.nih.gov/guide/email/pc/rules.htm

Only export the CRM rule.

2nd Phase Steps
Use the same above link to import the rules on their mailboxes. You could also export this rule from someone’s mailbox and import it but I have found that it doesn’t work all the time, thus make it as described and then import it.
